View Full Version : CounterStrike Comp @ TD

CounterStrike is not being run as part of the League this TD, but that doesnt mean we are going to neglect all you CS junkies out there.
We are going to run a CS comp....with a difference.
Basically we will have 2 pub CS servers running through the day and collecting logs from about 11am till 5pm. It will be a CS 'Marathon'
We will come up with some ideas for prizes which might be most kills through the day, best efficiency, most bomb plants/diffuses, most pistol kills etc (but prizes wont be known in advance)
At the end of the Marathon we will compile the logs and award prizes.
Question is, what server settings should we run ? Should we cap the player limit at 20, 16 or even 12 ? Maybe a 15 minute map rotation ? What maps ? Probably about 8 or so of the larger maps would be ideal.

Only problem I see with that, are you counting the logs for ALL day as the teams score? So if someone gets there right on time, and plays until it's time to go home, it'd be pretty hard for them to lose.
Just wondering how it's all going to be set out, cause I don't fancy playing CS for the entire lan (oh hoorah).

cpd, while it is true that a player who plays in the CS servers from 11am to 5pm will have an advantage, it by no means ensures they will win it. I'd say people would have to pace themselves so they dont get fatigue and start losing the edge.
I've seen top players go in and rip through pub servers in no time, racking up 5 times more kills than most....yet also a lot of these better players will be playing in the league and unable to be in the CS server all day.
Really it just encourages people to fill up the servers and keep games of CS running all day. I doubt anyone will play CS all day against their will just to win the prize. Its just a bonus for those people who chose CS as the only game they play and ensures for others there is always a game to 'fall back on' between games, or if they cant get any other games going on.
Ven, thanks for the pointers. Will look into your suggestions.
Others - good to get some enthusiastic / suggestive comments.

and from my understanding from the 'rules' so to speak...its not necessarily the person with the most kills or whatever at the end of the day that will get the prize/s...and we dont even know how to win the prize/s untill they are drawn so it doesnt matter if someone sits there all day or not..

if you think about it guys and stop complaining,it could be ANY factor could get you a prize
doesnt necessarily mean most kills..might be best kill to death ratio
so if someone only goes in there once and gets 50 - 0 they may win a prize
or it might even be most 5/7 kills....nobody knows ...so..play and find out
you can complain when you dont even know how it works :)
i think its a good idea really,it gives a lot of purpose to stats
although i really dont want to see the amount of people doing /rank -_-
i think psycho stats are the best thing for this the statsme mod clutters the game and basically screws it around
so yeah
i really like this idea though
this is the proper way to keep a game fluctuating all day

Basically if you have skill or persistance you are in with a chance of a prize. If you have both skill AND persistance you're chances are greatly improved.
At the moment I'm pretty sure 'most kills' will be one of the awards. The rest is hard to say. If I told you it would be 'most deagle kills' then everyone would run around with deagles all day.
Play your natural game.
We may even put the final stats up on the site for bragging rights if its well recieved.

As if counter-strike needs it... set aside the fact I don't like the idea of pub cs comps in any form.
I think you'd be better doing this for some other (new?) game, maybe that'd give you a little more options as to what comps you run next time, maybe it's a good way to get those good games out into the popular rotations? People complain about variety, I don't think this helps the situation at all.
It's a not a bad idea for the most part, basically a random frag but without having to pull the number out of a hat, as i see it (not that it's a bad thing ;) ).

Its simple. People want CounterStrike. You only have to look at the thread viewcount to see that. At time of writing this message, this thread had 80+ views compared to the Q3Wave thread which has about 8 - both were initiated at around the same time.
CS couldnt go in the League this LAN so something like this is the next best thing. Many LANners ONLY play CS. This is something to keep people interested and give them thier 'fix' of CS without bending the whole LAN over backwards to run them a major comp every time.
CS will be back in 5 vs 5 comp format in January.
People complain about variety
More recently they were complaining about there being too much variety
As for :-
...more options as to what comps you run next time
I can try that approach with things like the all-in-brawl (UT2K3) and Teamplay LAN (Wolf ET) to try and expand the games played and see how many people are 'really' interested in them. In all honesty gamers have not been very receptive. I'm sure if I tried this with UT2K3 the server would be empty after an hour.
I dont see this comp as random frag-like at all. Much more like the 'Best defender', 'Frag Master' and 'Flag runner' awards of the old Clash of Clans which we awarded based on stats. There is a very large skill element and persistance (endurance) will help.

I like the idea of the comp servers running all day, and then say, chalk up the table at the beginning of the day or before, so you know who you're going to play. Then, over the course of the day, have the clans mingle amongst themselves and organise the games, that way the games can be interspersed with random gaming or pub games for prac, and if there's only 3 games per team, it's what, 12 hours of lanning for 3 games? I'm sure each round won't take 4 hours to organise and play. :P

The only real difference is that the longer you play, the better your chances.
Unorganised play, where there is no incentive to let your teammate get a kill or help him, as it will effect your result and chances of winning the competition. yay
Of course that whole line of argument could be quieted with the winner having the most rounds won or something, but that brings a whole new set of problems though.
I'm sure if I tried this with UT2K3 the server would be empty after an hour.
Just as with the counter-strike competition, it will depend on the prize. :o Only difference would be that people would be playing something different.
I think all this could be put to something better, that's all. I dunno, certainly it's not a bad idea, a few guys will like it (no suprise) i just think it's a bit of a waste of time. Depends on your motivation I guess... clearly ours differ.
