New TeamDamage sponsor 'Evanscorp' who have agreed to help TeamDamage out by providing some surplus machines for game servers is offerring DSL connections.

$99 setup fee.

256/64 Kbps for $84.95 per month
512/128 Kbps for $99.95 per month

Both have no download caps, but some conditions :-
* Initial 6 month contract term, pay by the month thereafter. Set-up fee does not include modem. 30-day notice of cancellation required in writing and cancellation within initial 6-month contract term requires pay out of contract.
* Speed may be limited. Daily usage will be continually monitored over 7 days to ensure that usage is not excessive. Speeds may be gradually reduced for excessive usage. Flat Rate plans are for personal use and not recommended for commercial use due to possible speed variations.

Evanscorp also offers wireless access to some local areas. It is a little bit more expensive, but the speed is awesome and (hopefully) its what I'll soon be getting at home :D

For more info write to broadband@evanscorp.com.au

Mouse,
although ADSL is probably better overall, there are other options if your home is not in an ADSL enabled area.
Greg says he offers Wireless and another local company called Etherwave also does.
Apart from that you can get ISDN DOV, there are many companies who offer it and the prices are starting to become competative. Gives you opportunity to get 128/128 connection with game pings being very good from what I have read, even better than ADSL in some cases.

Gutty
2nd September 2003, 02:20 AM
Actually I should have added, if you havent checked recently (in last few months) try getting ADSL again, as Telstra have now setup a system were they check to see if they can take you off a Rim and run copper direct to your house if you were on a Rim.
The check is done automatically now and in some cases people who were previously unable to get ADSL, now can.

Gutty.

cpd
2nd September 2003, 08:34 AM
Gutty, the phone lines aren't good enough to cope with ADSL there. They're terrible.

The only thing is, if you apply for another ISP would Telstra do the same thing? I think not. And bugger going with Telstra on their 18 month contracts or whatever. Internode's 3 month contract all the way.

Gutty
2nd September 2003, 10:54 AM
Yes doesnt matter what ISP you apply for now, if the ADSL test fails they automatically have a process which Telstra run a check on your line to see if they can moe you onto copper and see if you can get it (Its ISP independant and has come about due to much complaining to ACCC from people).

As I said, you could also look into ISDN. Telstra now offer I think 2GB for around $58 (plus you would need to pay for setup and modem etc).
There are other companies as well that offer better value than Telstra ISDN. Its still much better than dialup as its 128K (if you use dual channel) digital connection. You should download around 14K/s and pings etc to most game servers will still be around 60 mark, sometimes much better (even 30 MS).

You could also look into Gregs Wireless, or Etherwave who offer wireless connections in this area. I know 2 people at work who use them.

Gutty.

Mr A westnet will screw ya 2 ! They all do .....it aint Broadband in this country its NARROWband....
Your gaming ping will suck cause even with a pop in nsw they will route everything back to perth. That means u go 2 x the breadth of this country, once to perth then back here for a sydney game server lol !

I totally agree. Every ISP will sooner or later screw you, it may be in a different way then before but at least they dont try and screw the same hole...ouch

Internode screwed me and now it seems Netspace is getting shitty but I'm gonna hold onto them because I dont see anyone else doing any better. It's just a waste of money to keep swapping ISP's and paying the setup cost or contract cost to eventually get the same shit service you had at the last place.

It's much smarter to stay with the one you are with now until broadband gets better in this country, which wont be soon. And before some leecher mentions there unlimited ISP, I DONT GIVE A SHIT because I dont use the cap I have at the moment so shut up!

Mr_A: In what way have they been screwing you? I have'nt heard about ti yet. Or is it a bit personal? :D Did it hurt? ;)

What we really need is a hardcore DSL provider based in Wollongong. So your data gets routed possible 30km or so.

they are very popular atm........good service, good feedback to clients, moving the whole client base from crummindco to connect for free (and at the old crummindico rates if you were a customer before 1st august 2k3)....this looks like an isp that cares about its clients...

Only 1 negative is QLD based , but with Johns pings as they are it dont matter !

They wont have a hardcore isp in wollongong anytime , they know I'm sitting here just waiting for the day !

For users who can get ADSL, ISDN is an excellent alternative. Plans are much cheaper, and its not a great deal more expensive to get setup.
If I lived outside of an ADSL enabled area (many new estates are), then I would probably be looking at ISDN. The plans are being improved.

As for Dart -> Commindico Reseller. Need I say more. The commindico dream is already on the way out.

As for Stark, how did Internode screw you ?
Personally I have used quite a few BB providers myself, and without a doubt Internode are king. The performance for me has been rock solid for 12 Months now. The only problem is they are a little expensive. I am thinking of trying Swiftel, but I know in my heart they cant sustain there network uncongested, with how they provision it. So I might give them a 3 month trial unless Node release their new plans within a week or so.

Gutty.

Gutty
4th September 2003, 11:56 PM
Oops Yeah I didnt realise they were moving off Commindio, but then the company isnt doing well. I still however am very hesitant to believe unlimted is viable, without performance suffering. I have been with both IINET and Internode, and Telstra, and got my father to use IGREEN(FLOW). At this time I just dont believe Unlimited is viable. But then people have to make their own decisions in this world. I kinda need the reliability for work. If I get paged at 3 in the morning, last thing I want to do is try get online only to have my network connection unavailable or slow. One of the reasons I am so hesitant to change from Node, they have an excellent network setup, with quite a bit of Redundancy.

Gutty.
