Default [UPDATE] Teamdamage Quake 1 CTF night - Thursdays from 7PM AEST

Hi All,

We had a decent turn out last Thursday which was really encouraging. I think we averaged between 6-8 players in the game at one time – although some people couldn’t stick around for long and others joined in later on so we had probably 13-14 people jumping into the server at one point or another. I think everyone had fun  we played a few of the old faithful standard maps – Mckinley Base (twice), Da Ancient War Grounds, Forgotten Mines, Spill the Blood (greatest CTF map ever conceived). We then had a bit of a go at arena, and finished off the night with a big Team DM game on death32c.

The response has been great so I think we’ll look at running this every Thursday night from 7PM. I’d really like to encourage people to use voice chat software whilst we are in game – it adds a huge aspect to team play when you can hear what your team mates are saying/doing/cursing...

Trojan and I would like to help the ‘greener’ players who are interested in playing – Quake 1 CTF can be a daunting experience for new comers – especially when you are going toe-to-toe with some of the old veterans in the game. So we’d like to help out by showing new players the different maps and some tips and tricks to help you survive in game. We’ll be popping into the CTF server from 6PM to do this – feel free to come in. There will be no killing (server will be in pre war state) – just running around showing you guys what you need to know.

A couple of things to note about the servers:

• When connecting, it may say ‘match in progress’ – this means a CTF match has started already. You will need to type ‘spectator 1’ before connecting. When the match ends, an admin will draft you into a team for the next map.
• Sometimes you may join and find you can run around and shoot but not kill anything. This is pre-war state. This is where players can take a short break and we wait for newcomers to get ready. Once we are ready to go and the teams are set, everyone will type ‘ready’ in their console to start the match.
• Teamspeak (or mumble, if we decide to go with this in the future) is greatly encouraged. In fact it is frowned upon if you don’t use it. Trust us – you will enjoy the game allot more when you are able to talk to your team mates.
• Teamspeak server: ‘teamdamage.com’
• We will kick off at 7PM
• Matches go for 20 minutes at this stage
• Approx 10 minute pre-war state between maps for breaks/ready up time
• CTF server: qw.teamdamage.com:27504

See you Thursday night 

Can I suggest using Mumble instead of TeamSpeak ?

http://mumble.sourceforge.net/

If you can get the overlay working for Q1 then its a very worthwhile enhancement (you can see who's talking)

I lost Q1 setup in my last HDD crash and I'm sure there are others who will need to rebuild thier Q1 folders, so could I suggest you kick this off at/after the upcoming TeamDamage to maximise initial momentum ?

As I mentioned in a previous thread I think that for TD to remain relevant there needs to be a shift toward online gaming and this is a good first step, however Q1 is going to have limited appeal beyond the old schoolers and other (newer) games could be considered....maybe even added to the Thurs night as a rotation ?

I love the old Q1CTF, but playing the same people every week does get stale. You need to set a regularity that is sustainable otherwise it will eventually fall away like the last ArenaVeterani effort.

i check out this mumble 2 but teamspeak has always worked really wel in the past.

we will definately do soemthing on thursday becuase we have a few people who ahve jumped into the servers who have expressed interest like tripper etc. Ben tells me he has 15 people who have expressed interest (of course only a percentage of those will turn up.

hay anyone who is new to quake and new to quake ctf scorp and i will be online early from abotu 6:15 onwards to show the maps help with configs like grapple binding etc

quake it a very simple game to play butt he skill level between a decent play and a beginner is huge and the different between a decent play and a very good is is massive agin. i would hate for some person to jump in and get so raped their first time that they leave never to return. hopefully a bit of help from the expeience scorpin will help these people out.
